Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years we get asked all sorts of questions. Here are some of the typical ones we get asked on a regular basis.

In the meantime, if you have other questions do not hesitate to call in and ask us. 303 449-7588.

We are here to help guitarists, all of them. If we can help you, we will!

Do I have to practice?

Only if you want to get better!

No matter what anyone else had said about how easy it is to learn to play guitar, the truth is you have to practice if you want to improve. The coordination and skill that a guitar player has is comparable to a surgeon. In order to gain that much skill, you must teach your hands. That is one of the big benefits scales provide. The better your instruction and tools, the better your technique will become as well as your hand strength.

But I just want to play a little. Why should I invest in this?

Because this way you will make all the progress you want very quickly! And remember this is an investment in yourself! Even if you just want to strum a few chords and sing badly, this will help you to get where you want and stay there.

And by the way, you are kidding yourself! You want to be much better than that, but you might not think you want to get into it deeply enough to get past the initial barriers. With Uncle Tim you should skyrocket past what you thought you would accomplish. And you should have more fun doing it too!

How do you learn to play lead guitar?

The fastest way is to start with scales. Actually the diatonic scales. Lots of people start with the pentatoinic scales, but I perfer to start with the diatonic scales (major and minor scales).

Lead lines are basically linear streams of notes, almost always in a key. By learning to play the diatonic scales you are actually learning to play in all twelve major and all twelve minor keys. This will allow you to listen to a piece of music, figure out the key and overlay a lead line based on the scale of the key.

Do I have to read music?

No! Not even one note.

Although the musical notation for chords and scales is always provided, this system is a visually based system. You can choose to only look at the dots and play the notes based on the dots, however, if you want more information it is always provided so you can delve as deep as you want or just look at the graphic images and play along.

What if I get lost in the material?

Simple! Call us. We are here to help you and we answer every question asked. No matter who asks it.

These books are designed to be very simple to follow along but packed full of important material. Usually backing up a page or two will help to keep you confident. But sometimes you need to talk to a real person, if that need arises, then just call the office. If we are in, we will take your call and help you. If not, we will return your phone call or email. Phone: 303 449-7588

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes we offer a lifetime guarantee!

Most people refuse to part with their copies of the Uncle Tim Series, however, we stand behind our work completely! If you are ever dissatisfied, just let us know, if you purchased from us, we will have a record and can easily issue a refund. So far with hundreds of thousands of books out there already, we have only been asked four times for a refund.

How long does it take to become a guitar player?

Usually between three and nine months depending on how many hours you practice each day. Music is a process. There is much reprogramming of the brain as you begin to think in terms of tones and notes. You will have to practice before you begin to acquire strength and ability, but you will acquire it. If you play scales every day, you will greatly speed up the process.

If you follow along and play through each page, you should expect to see strong growth within two weeks and an overall understanding taking shape very quickly. If you do not see this growth, call in and we will help you.

I am only a beginner, do I have to play scales?

Anyne who plays scales will get better faster and have greater ability once they do.

Everyone should play scales. Everyone! But you may find out something else too. Scales are actually fun. Once you get over the stretching necessary as you learn and you begin to develop muscle memory, they are great fun. And you can always ask your friends to play some chord progressions so you can play a lead over their work. Lead guitar is very fun and scales are the primary mechanism to learn to play lead guitar.

Will I be better than my friends that do not use your material?

Very good chance of that particularly if you do start an active scale program.

I have included all the exercises you need to develop serious muscles and great tactile feedback. These very serious tools should begin to make a difference within a month or two and continue to help you become better than casual players.

How much memorization is required?

Surprisingly very little!

Make no mistake about it, there is a lot of material in these books! But I figured out a long time ago that if you look at the whole thing visually, suddenly everything becomes much easier and you can understand the overall big picture too! By using a visual approach you can cut down on rote memorization by over 95%. And everything is absolutely correct. You will learn it correctly the very first time

Want an example?

Did you know every scale contains a major tonal center as well as a minor tonal center? They do and it is a very big deal! If you are playing the scale of C major, you are also playing the scale of A minor. A minor is the relative minor key to C major so it uses the same scale and the same chords. When you memorize C major you are also memorizing A minor. That should cut down scale memorization by 50% right there, not to mention chord studies. There are more ways to cut it down ever further and be able to use it without any additional work. Much further!

Is this method accurate?

100% and verifiable!

When you map out a key on the fretboard, you create a matrix. A visual, physical matrix. It is created by the laws of music theory. It is the same for each and every key! Always! We develop an overall matrix using illustration software and all graphics are carved out of it. The matrix is compared to each key and if there is a mistake in it, it stands out like a sore thumb. So we have a very good way of checking to ensure complete accuracy.

Do you change any of the reader comments?

Not even to correct spelling!

The reader comments are copied from emails and letters users have sent in. They are unsolicited and always from the heart. These are actual experiences from real users. We do not change them in any way!

I suggest you check out a few comments from readers now. Here is the link.

I am a beginner. How much do I have to invest to make this work?

$15! That's right, you total investment could be fifteen dollars.

I suggest you start with a copy of Uncle Tim's First Year and start using it right away. That is all you need! You do not need to spend a lot of money. Just get Uncle Tim's First Year and start to play the chords and scales in each key as presented. Also make sure you read the section on technique several times and check your posture to make sure you are not developing bad habits. You can always add other products to help you quicken the pace later, but you probably do not need to do that. Most people find Uncle Tim's First Year to be complete and all they need. It is designed to be totally complete and we did not make any mistakes in doing that.
