Uncle Tim's Diminished ScalesUncle Tim's Diminished Scales For Guitar

Uncle Tim's Diminished Scales are symmetrical scales.

Harmonic Minor Scales - Key of A MinorThese are specialty scales with limited uses. They are called symmetrical scales because they are symmetrical in design. They have a symmetry that extends all the way through the scale.

This fact alone can make them hard to handle. They do not necessarily adhere to a tonal center and since they have such limiting symmetry, it is difficult to tell one key from another. Nevertheless they do have applications.

Diminished scales can be used in a variety of music whenever that diminished sound is required. And if used carefully can be injected into many different forms of music. The sound is very strong yet it does not modulate to a key center like a diatonic key will.

The symmetry does come into play during practice routines. These unusual scales present so many considerations for playing scales sequentially that great care must be placed on knowing the scale pattern well. You may find these scales work best with minor keys and minor chords.

One Signature To Rule Them All

C Major Diminished ScaleThese scales are built on the formula for diminished scales starting on the keynote. These are eight note scales with a spacings that only includes Minor thirds. There is never a time when the scale does not use minor third spacing. That is they type of symmetry present. You only have to look at the diagram to see this. These types of scales do not adhere to typical tonal center relationships. You will not hear the strong key based tonality with these scales, but they are still presented in a key based system which should help to understand the construction.

But comparing the Diatonic to other signatures you can develop an advanced understanding of what all these scales do. If you create a framework that has all twelve notes on it and overlay each of these scale types you will see that they all cover a unique set of notes with unique intervals. So together they serve to cover a wide variety of intervals. And most of the time they form tonal center that are honored in every key. This scale type, not so much. This visual framework works!

When you combine Different Scales with Uncle Tim's Diatonic Triads you create a big palette for song and lead line creation

Remember that in Uncle Tim's Diatonic Triads we are going to take this diatonic twelve fret signature and split in into four three string sets and start pulling out the chord progressions in the diatonic minor key. These are the standard triads used to build songs in western keys.

They set the stage for someone to lay lead lines using various scale types over diatonic chord progressions created out of diatonic keys. This is an advanced variants found in musical circles for song creation today. Combine diatonic chords with different scales and you have an opportunity to create advanced and unusual songs.

Diatonic Triad Cascades

All of Uncle Tim's eBooks are constructed using the Circle of Fifths

The Circle of Fifths

When you use any of Uncle Tim's eBooks you will always progress through each key by way of the Circle of Fifths. This is how music is created using a key based approach and these chords are created by applying the rules of theory to the key of C major using Uncle Tim's unique visual method.

The Circle of Fifths starts out with the key of C major and proceeds by building each scale. We progress through the same sequence when creating cascades based on the scale. This is a very good way to tie this information into other information about each key that you already know. So you can expand your knowledge and begin to tie everything together.

And these triad cascades offer excellent practice for finger gymnastics. They go nicely with scale practice too.
